404 Not Found : What It Is and How to Fix It

A 404 error indicates that the webpage you're trying to reach can't be found. You might see a 404 error because of a problem with the website, because the page was moved or deleted, or because you typed the URL wrongly.
  • 1. Double-Check the URL

  • Regardless of whether you have entered the URL address manually or been directed via a link, it could be that a mistake has been made. For this reason you should check the specified path of the website. It could be that either you, or the person who entered the link, has mistyped something.
Double-check the URL you've entered, especially if you typed it by hand. You might have made a simple typo.
  • 2. Refresh the Page

  • It might be that the error 404 has appeared for the simple reason that the page did not load properly. This can be checked quite easily by clicking on the ‘Refresh’ button in your browser or also by pressing the F5 button.
  • 3. Go Back Through the Directory Levels

  • All you need to do is clear the last directory in the URL. The link for the page you are looking for should be visible on the previous page. If it is not to be found on that page then you can also go back to the previous page and look for the correct link there. If it happens, this method is also successful and you eventually end up back on the homepage, then move onto the next tip.
For example, if www.web.com/a/b/c.htm gave you the 404 Not Found error, move up to www.web.com/a/b/. If you get nothing here (or an error), move up to www.web.com/a/. This should lead you toward what you're looking for or at least confirm that it's no longer available.
  • 4. Use a Search Engine

  • Search for the page from a popular search engine to find the page again. It may have moved to a different URL. It's possible that you simply have the entirely wrong URL in which case using Google or a similar search engine should get you where you want to go.
  • 5. Clear the Browser Cache and Delete Cookies

  • If you have another computer, phone, or tablet available, try the page there. If you can see the webpage from another device, it's probably a problem with your computer's cache. Therefore you should delete the browser cache as well as all cookies for this site, and this may then finally allow you to access the page.
  • 6. Contact the Site Owner to Report the 404 Error

  • If none of the tips mentioned above have been successful then the only remaining option may be to get in touch with the person responsible for the website. Contact information can usually be found in the website’s masthead or else on a specific ‘Contact Us’ page. The operators of the website should be able to provide information as to whether the page you are looking for actually exists.
